Ruka and the two surviving girls return to the island years after their rescue, still amnesic, to find the truth. The story’s ritual mask inspired the game’s name. As in previous games, the main character uses the Camera Obscura to explore and fight evil spirits.
When Keisuke Kikuchi saw the Wii, he got the idea for “the Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. Kikuchi, series co-creator Makoto Shibata, and Grasshopper Manufacture’s Goichi Suda returned as producer, director, co-writer, and designer. The gameplay concept was making the player feel the horror.
The team’s reevaluation of the formula was tumultuous after adding developers. As usual, Tsuki Amano sang the theme. The Wii original sold the most copies and received positive reviews.

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse lets players control four different protagonists as they explore a traditional Japanese home and a Meiji-era sanatorium-turned-hotel while fending off ghosts with the series’ Camera Obscura.
The Wii Remote and Nunchuck control third-person movement and first-person weaponry like the Camera Obscura. While exploring, evil spirits touch the characters, draining their health. Bayonetta Origins’ solo co-op was enjoyable after an hour of Brothers’ puzzle platforming. I think playing with a friend via a Joy-con would be entertaining (or difficult), even though Nintendo says the game is for solitary play.
Even with two controllers, fighting and obstacle navigation are deep. Bayonetta protects Cheshire from woodland spirits. Cheshire condenses, letting them employ his grappling hook in previously inaccessible places. Use both hands because of the slower speed.
Cereza’s plushie demon, who hates hugs but requires the witch to survive, is cute. Bayonetta’s illustrations are great. The game is more like a modern fairy tale than the chaotic action-packed circus of previous chapters since a younger Cereza is still finding her place.
Bayonetta Origins surprised me. I like the latest Cereza game, but I miss its grandiosity. If Bayonetta’s visuals turned you off, try Cereza and the Demon on March 17.
